Regular School Board Meeting

Moretown Elementary School library, March 11, 2008

Present:

Board members: Jay Pilliod, Lisa Ransom and John Schmeltzer

(Absent: Charles Abare Jr. and Amy Bolger)

School Administrators: Roberta Barone and Bob McNamara

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 pm by Bob McNamara. Bob welcomed everyone and confirmed that this was to be a meeting to reorganize.

Election of Board Officials

Election of board chair:

On a motion by Lisa , seconded by Jay, the board voted unanimously to elect John our continuing Board Chair.

Additional board positions/designation of newspaper of record:

On a motion by John, seconded by Jay, the board voted unanimously to elect Amy Board Clerk.

(Amy Bolger joined the meeting at 6:08).

On a motion by John, seconded by Jay, the board voted unanimously to elect Charles truant officer. John nominated Lisa to serve as Washington West Supervisory Union (WWSU) Executive Board representative and the board appointed her. The board appointed John and Lisa to serve as WWSU representatives; Charles, Jay and Amy will serve as alternates. On a motion by John, seconded by Amy, the board voted to designate the "Times Argus" and the "Valley Reporter" newspapers of record.

Scheduling of Board Meetings for Next Year

The board next discussed meeting dates and times for April 2008 – March 2008 and decided to meet the first Tuesday of each month whenever possible. The following meetings are regular meetings, which will begin at 6 p.m. at the Moretown Elementary School library, unless otherwise noted: 4/1/08; 4/29/08 (takes the place of a meeting in May); 6/3/08; no July meeting; 8/5/08 (and there will also be a retreat in August, date and time TBA); 9/2/08; 10/7/08; 11/4/08; 12/2/08; 1/6/09; 2/3/09/ and 3/2/09. Dates and times for special budget meetings will be determined early in the fall of ‘08.

Superintendent Report

Bob reminded us of the Superintendent Seminar focusing on mathematics, which will take place from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. on 3/26 at Harwood. Food will be provided.

Bob noted that a 5 minute survey would be emailed to board members to assess their views on the relative importance of the most likely issues the interim superintendent would address. The goal is to put the best possible transition plan together.

Superintendent Search Committee Update

On a motion by John, seconded by Lisa, at 6:52 the board went into executive session to discuss the search. The board emerged at 7:02. No votes were taken. Board members were reminded of the 5:00 p.m. 3/18 meeting where there would be an opportunity to meet and interview two candidates for interim superintendent.

Principal Report (including Safe Routes)

On a motion by Amy, seconded by John, the board moved to have Lisa sign a letter in support of the Moretown School’s Safe Routes to School Application.

Other Business

The board discussed dissatisfaction with and concerns relating to the way that Kingsbury has plowed the parking lot this year. Roberta said she’d talk with Greg to document all concerns. Concerns will be relayed to Kingsbury. The board discussed how to best handle the decision making process for next school year, as to whom would be selected to plow.

The board discussed pros and cons of going out to bid (not legally mandated). No decisions were made. Roberta noted that perhaps the town could take over plowing and the school could reimburse the town for costs. No decisions were made.

Approval of Meeting Minutes

On a motion by Amy, seconded by Lisa, the minutes of the 2/12 and the 3/3 special board meetings were unanimously adopted.

Board Orders

On a motion by Jay, seconded by John, the board approved the following board orders: # 61 for $24,211.99; #62 for $14,375.49; and #63 for $33,351.82. It was noted that #60 is missing; Amy will follow up with Marilyn.

Update on Deeryard Easement

There was nothing new to report.

Adjournment

On a motion by John, seconded by Jay, the meeting was adjourned at 6:58 pm.
