MORETOWN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

October 4, 2007

School Website: www.moretownschool.org

Dear Parents & Friends,

Professional development:

As part of our writing initiative, we have invited Karen Kurzman to spend a day a month in our school. Karen is a writing teacher and writing consultant known throughout New England for her work in setting high standards for all students to become effective writers. Karen will eventually teach in all of our classrooms for a sustained period of time while our teachers will have the opportunity to observe and take note of a variety of strategies and techniques of best practice. I think our teachers here at Moretown are incredibly competent and what makes them exceptional is that they know they can always learn more and be better. Karen will be in classrooms next week and students in grades three through six will experience report writing with this guest teacher.

Next Wednesday…early release…no chaos…okay, less chaos. Our first early release day did not go well in terms of bussing. Next Wednesday, October 10th, we will again dismiss at 11:55. Harwood will be releasing at 12:12 which will mean that our students will leave our dooryard to arrive at Harwood at the same time those students are dismissing. In planning for your child’s arrival home, I would estimate that once the Harwood students board our buses, they would pass by Moretown School to begin routes at about 12:20 (all things being equal and let’s hope they are).

Moretown Music Notes

On Wednesdays from 4-5:00 I am offering "Composition Club" to students in grades 5-6. We will use computer notation software to write music that can be played back through our electric keyboards instantaneously. These compositions may be posted to the "Vermont Midi Project" website for comment and critique by professional musicians. There is also the possibility for selected student compositions to be performed in a

concert in Burlington at the end of the year along with students from all over the state. For more information on the program please visit www.vtmidi.org.

This program is suitable for motivated students of all abilities and everyone is invited to participate. However, we have only four computers for students to work at, so depending on interest, we may need to make a rotating schedule for participation. Students who will not be going home and then returning to school for composition club during the hour from 3:00 to 4:00 may do homework or read in the music room. Please let me know via email if your child is interested in participating.

Best Wishes,

Michael Close
