Mrs. Orr’s Classroom News

September 13, 2007

Dear Moms and Dads,

"Look! The monarch has hatched!" cheered one of the children. This was definitely one of the highlights for the children this week. Now, I just need to clarify that the chrysalis is not an egg, so therefore the butterfly emerges rather than hatches. We also received some Painted Lady butterfly caterpillars in the mail this week. We’ll watch them go through metamorphosis and become a butterfly as well. We found out some interesting facts about them: 1) They taste food with their feet! and 2) They have 10,000 eyes!

Your child will be brining home a letter about a book character named Flat Stanley. We are asking you to give us two addresses on pre-addressed and stamped envelopes for a Flat Stanley project. The letter will explain this project in more detail. If the letter doesn’t arrive home in their homework folder, please let me know. We are still working on getting into the habit of putting all papers to go home inside the folder.

Last week Karen Kurzman introduced the children to a narrative. They found out that a narrative is a story that contains a character(s), a problem, and a solution to the problem. Karen read a book called Amazing Grace and Harry and the Terrible Whatsit and asked the children to identify each of these parts of a narrative. The children also found that narratives contain dialogue. Karen started a group narrative about a bat with the children. We finished the narrative on Friday. Attached you will find a copy. We have written another group narrative about Madeline. Next week the children will begin writing their own narrative about the character named Stanley. You might ask your child if they can identify the parts of this narrative about the bat (character, problem, solution).

Here are some questions to ask your child:

How did you dress your Flat Stanley?

What is Stanley’s problem in the new book Mrs. Orr is reading? (he’s invisible)

How did you let the monarch butterfly go?

What problem did Madeline have in our group narrative? (she was being teased)

Kathi
