Mrs. Orr’s Classroom News
February 14, 2008
Dear Moms and Dads,
Love is…
Opening the door for my mother,
Helping my sister go down the stairs,
Picking up my friends when they fall,
Helping my dad carry wood,
Giving things to others,
Being a good listener for your teacher,
Protecting my sister,
Playing with my dog.
These are just a few of the ideas your children came up with about how they can show love.
We’ll be busy today making the ice cream! Make sure to ask your child what changes they saw in the liquid solution.
Due to the fact that we needed to open our Valentines and enjoy our ice cream, we didn’t get to go snowshoeing/skiing this week. We’ll try again next week. We also made up our library time today so there just wasn’t enough time in the day to fit everything in.
The first graders are busy conducting surveys in math. They are asking questions such as: "What is your favorite sport?" They have to record the answers/data their peers tell them and then interpret the data they have collected.
We had a visit from a woman named Sister Ruth on Tuesday. She shared a slide show of children she visited in Africa along with animals and other scenery of the area. We in turn wrote letters to students in the school she visited. The students are very excited to get letters from children in America. One of the children asked Sister Ruth this question: "I don’t mean to be rude, but why aren’t there any white people in this school?" Sister Ruth explained that it is very hot there and black skin is better suited for the hot sun that our white skin. We would just burn.
I think that is it for this short week! Hopefully, we’ll have a full week of school soon.
Here are some questions to ask your child this week:
What did you tell the African student you wrote to about your school?
What animals did you see in the slide show by Sister Ruth?
How many kids were in the school Sister Ruth visited?(900)
How did the liquid change when you made ice cream?
What did you make last week with your learning partners? (a paper quilt about our dream to make the world a better place)
