Ms. Hartshorn’s Classroom News
November 8, 2007
Dear Families,
"Serve warm with butter and a beaming smile." This is a quote
directly from Bob’s Red Mill Cornmeal package found at the end of recipe for
Golden Cornbread. We made cornbread using this recipe in school this week as
part of our local history study.
We also made butter from cream using the "shake forever in a glass baby
food jar" method, since we didn’t have a butter churn around. After we
enjoyed eating the cornbread with our class-made butter, there were many beaming
smiles!
As I was putting my gardens to bed for the winter, I pull up what was left of the rosemary, thyme and sage, brought them to school, and hung them to dry for the kids to watch. Now that the herbs have dried, we’ve been using a wooden mortar and pestle to grind up our herbs, smell them and flavor our butter with them. Saltine crackers with herbed butter were snacks one afternoon. Yum!
November 15th is Picture Re-take Day. This is a day your child can have his or her picture taken at school if he or she missed the day earlier in the school year OR if you weren’t happy with the pictures your child brought home. You must return the envelope with the original pictures on this day, and a re-take will be taken.
Please see an attached notice about a very BIG day coming up at school on Nov. 28th!
My son celebrates his 25th birthday this weekend. Tough to believe I’m the mother of a young man who is a quarter of a century old. He is student teaching in a grade 4 classroom in Rhode Island and loving it. My daughter is just beginning to get homesick, and she’s not able to come home from college until December. She actually asked me for editing advice about one of her papers, "Nurture verses Nature in Polyandry Marriage," for her Anthropology of Gender class. I’m sure there’s a joke here in this situation, but I’m too stunned to be able to think of one.
Sincerely,
Brenda
