Ms. Hartshorn’s Classroom News

April 17, 2008

Dear Families,

We survived the Gates-MacGinitie reading test. Actually, your children did very well with this change in the schedule and structure of the morning. Thank you for your support in getting your children to school on time, to bed the night before and off to school with breakfast in their tummies!

REMINDER: If you have not done so already, please send in your child’s permission slip for the May 1st field trip to Shelburne Farms. A second copy is attached if you need one. Your child also needs to send in $5.00 for this field trip, and checks can be made payable to "Moretown School Primary Unit." We are in need of chaperones, so if you are able to join us, please indicate that on the permission form, and I will get in touch with you to confirm. Shelburne Farms is a wonderful field trip for children and adults—I always enjoy it so much, and think parents would like it, too. THANKS!

More WORDS, please…We have quite a collection of words for our duel with Mrs. Orr’s class. We could use any more you can think of that have to do with SPRING. Our duel is this Friday—tomorrow!

Mrs. Bentley invited us to the Moretown Memorial Library this week. She read us two stories from the NEW Red Clover book list for 08-09! Did your child tell you the titles and what they were about? We also got to sign out books, and several children received an award for the poster contest celebrating National Library Month.

Painting, painting and more painting! We’ve been splattering, printing with Plexi-glass, scrunching with plastic wrap, sponging, and sprinkling with salt each afternoon. All of this with water color paints in preparation for making collage books, which will begin sometime after vacation. We are also using brilliantly bright liquid water colors on watercolor paper with some amazing results. After vacation, when the weather is a bit warmer, we will look for a sunny, warm and dry day to go outside to do our MARBELIZING papers. Oh what fun! And wait until you see the beautiful illustrations and stories that will come of all of this painting. It’s a long process from painting to actual publishing, but it will be well worth the effort in the end.

Dates to Remember:

April 21st-April 25th: School Vacation

May 1st: Field trip to Shelburne Farms. Your child will need cold lunch, drink in non-breakable container, and a snack. Your child will also need mud boots, coat, and appropriate clothing for the weather.

May 7th: I will be giving all my second graders the Vermont Developmental Reading Assessment. You’ll receive more information about this assessment in the future.

May 8th: Four Winds Lesson: Plant and Animal Defenses—We will probably be going outside, so please send your child to school with appropriate outdoor wear, INCLUDING comfortable shoes for walking in the woods and fields.

May 15th: Spring concert with Mr. Close

June 12th: SECOND graders to Ms. H.’s house—this is an annual event. FIRST graders will get to come next year. It’s a way of celebrating the end of two years together before the big move to THIRD grade.

JUNE 12th: ALL FIRST and SECOND Graders and their families will be invited back to school around 5:00—time to be confirmed---for a sharing of collage books!

June 13th: FIELD DAYS at Moretown School!!!

Happy Vacation!

Brenda
