Dear Parents,

Last week we spent time reading and learning about black bears.

Here are some of the interesting facts we learned:

-Besides being black, their fur can also come in shades of brown and sometimes even blue.

-They have a great sense of smell and hearing which makes up for their lousy vision.  In fact black bears only see in black and white.

-They are omnivores-which mean they eat both plants and meat.

-The sows often give birth to their cubs (up to five at a time) while they are sleeping.

-The sows find their wintering dens early in the fall, while the boars (males) often wait until the first big snow to go looking for a den.

-Black bears are great tree climbers and swimmers.

Be sure to ask your child about black bears!

This week our focus will shift to another type of bears- teddy bears!  On Tuesday we’ll be celebrating our soft and huggable friends!  Please help you child choose one stuffed teddy bear to bring to school for our celebration.  Thanks!

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, we will be learning about wild turkeys.  If you have any interesting information about turkeys, please send it to school.

As we talk about preparing for winter, please be sure to send your child to school with warm clothing each day.  You may want to leave an extra hat and mittens in your child’s backpack in case they need them to stay warm on the playground.  Thanks!

Arriving home on Monday will be your child’s fall narrative.  This report was written by me about your child’s time in our classroom this fall. The main focus of the report is on your child’s social and emotional development thus far into the school year.  As you read it over be sure to make notes of anything we should talk about further-either celebrations or concerns.  I will do the same as I prepare for our conference.  I’m looking forward to meeting with all of you soon.
